Anaemia refers to the condition in which the blood is deficient in red blood cells (haemoglobin portion of red blood cells). The primary function of red blood cells is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the tissues of the body in exchange for carbon dioxide. The symptoms of anaemia depends not only on the severity, but also on the speed at which the anaemia has developed, acute/chronic loss of blood, decreased oxygen carrying capacity of blood, palpitation, dyspnoea on exertion, fainting attack, oedema of the ankles, angina pectoris. Patients with pernicious anaemia are more likely to develop gastric carcinoma. Pallor of the mouth membrane, conjunctiva, the nail beds, and palmar creases. Oedema, high pulse pressure, tachycardia & heart failure.
